Captivating the soul of survivors

According to a news report on BBC One presented in 12 November 2007, there were 85,000 women raped in the UK in the previous year, equating to about 230 cases every day. According to that report one of every 200 women in the UK was raped in 2006. On average 1 in 6 women will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetimes.
Rape and sexual assault is just one of the many issues that can affect women in their lives. Daily factors, influences and crime can have an unimaginable effect on people and often trap them into a vicious cycle of crime, violence and self-destruction.
Many of us have experienced the unthinkable, risked our lives for the sake of others and often are just very angry at what life has thrown of us.
So what happens when self-harm turns into addiction – how do victims become survivors? Is there a way out?
The answer is no easy one but the long one is yes. It takes time and support but yes.
City Hearts is a charity that helps survivors overcome serious life issues such as drug addiction, self-harm and trafficking. It is a residential programme for girls over the age of 18 years old and is also connected to Hope City Church.
They not only help these women but they empower them providing them wth the tools and positive coping mechanisms so the women can have prosperous lives.
They deliver a multiplatform service of drama workshops, life skill sessions as well as counselling and social groups.

CASE STUDY 1
Name: “Amy”
Age: 24
Story: Amy dated a drug dealer whih opened up her eyes to the world of sex workers and trafficking (she knew murdered Bradford Sex worker – Suzanne Rushwrth). She developed a heroine addiction, which she would pay for by shop-lifting and taking drugs from her circle of friends. City Hearts helped her out of the viscious cycle by giving her 24 hour support and an empathetic ear. Amy is now “glad that there’s a safe place” away from her past life and is now looking at building a positive future.

CASE STUDY 2
Name: “Po”
Age: 29
Story: Po has a history of Bulimia and self-harm which stemmed from her violent upbringing as she was sexually abused by a family member who trapped her into a ring of violence. Her coping mechanisms such as self-harm became so prevalent in her life to the point she couldn’t walk past a man without self-harming.
After years of ‘coping’ with things on her own she finally sought the help of City Hearts who provided Po with professional counselling to help her “deal with things from childhood” as well as a variety of other support services.
She now is a true survivor and works in schools and the community through City Hearts’ ‘Leadership Academy’ talking about her own experiences and showing oteher people that there is hope. She now has put positive coping mechanisms in place to deal with life issues and would go as far as saying that City Hearts has “given me a reason to be alive as well as saving my life.”

CASE STUDY 3
Name: “Victoria”
Age: 26
Story: Victoria has always been “the life and soul of the party” but her veneer hides a difficult past.
She grew up always seeking for a father figure in her life and struggled with her self-esteem. She sought men to provide her with the affection and attention she craved. Until she met the man of her dreams, at least she thought she did.
When she moved in with her long-term boyfriend things quickly spiralled out -of -control. He locked her in the apartment forcing her not to eat unless he was around. This then lead her into a cycle of bulimia and depression as she relied on her boyfriend for food and freedom.
Eventually she left her boyfriend and found “acceptance through City Hearts” and let go of her suicidal thoughts. She now works at one of City Hearts’ residential homes helping other people “see their way out” of compromising situations.

All these ladies have broken barriers surrounding them with stigma and addiction but prove that the right support can eventually give people hope and a way to manage the issues they may face. These women are true survivors, role models and most of all prove that empowerment can be achieved against the odds.

The project also provides a refuge for women coming out of prostitution and exploitation. Help us change lives.
Siobhan Bullock, director of City Hearts, said: “We hosted ‘Captivating’ in-house at The Megacentre last year, and it was such a success that we had a vision to make it bigger and better.
“We’re so excited for the event to be held at Sheffield City Hall and are grateful for their support. City Hearts is a brilliant charity which can sometimes be overlooked by some of the city’s bigger charities. But by holding it in the Oval Hall we have the capacity to get our name out there to a bigger audience, while putting on a fab event! Fashionistas shouldn’t miss it!”

On Saturday 4 June, at 3.30pm, the steps of City Hall will come alive with the sound of East as a group of select performers, including TV star Sophie Mei, perform an Eastern taster to promote the international Bellydance Superstars’s festival: Raqs Britannia – which comes to Sheffield’s City Hall from 25 – 27 June.

The performers will also be showing their support for the England and Sheffield bid to be a host for the 2018 FIFA World CupTM by wearing the Bid’s products for a special photo shoot.

Raqs Britannia is the biggest bellydance festival in Europe and it is presented by the international Bellydance Superstars (BDSS), who were founded by former manager of Sting and the Police Miles Copeland.   The festival’s new spectacular Saturday night showThe Art of Bellydance – has garnered world-wide accolades.

Sheffielder and nationally-known TV bellydance star Sophie Mei will be compering some the festival’s events, along with the legendary Miles Copeland.

Compere and co-director of MEI International Ltd, Sophie Mei, says:

“The event on Saturday 4 June will bring a taste of the east to the steps of Sheffield’s City Hall and highlight the wonderful opportunity we have at our finger tips later in June, to get involved for the first time ever in Europe’s premier bellydance festival, Raqs Britannia, and to see its spectacular Saturday night show, The Art of Bellydance. We hope that people will come and join us and enjoy the popular dance form of bellydance. It is not elitist and you don’t have to be a perfect shape or a certain age to do it.

“It is a tremendous coup for the city to have landed Miles Copeland’s international Bellydance Superstars to put on Raqs Britannia – which lasts three days from 25 – 27 June here at the City Hall and we hope people who might be a bit nervous about trying out the workshops, will at least come to see the BDSS’s spectacular Saturday night show The Art of Bellydance.  Tickets for the Saturday night show are as cheap as £10 and they can book tickets by ringing 0114 2 789 789”

Director of Sheffield’s 2018 bid Wayne Coyle says:

“We are delighted to have the backing of Sophie Mei and the International Bellydance Superstars who will be helping to spread the word globally about how equipped and enthusiastic England is to hold the World Cup in 2018 and what huge support Sheffielders are giving to the Bid. It once again demonstrates the International dimension of the city and why Sheffield would be like ‘home from home’ for visitors to the FIFA World Cup”

The Art of Bellydance starts at 7.45pm on Saturday and tickets cost from only £17.50 (some as affordable as £10 in section D) – there are also family tickets and concessions.  For tickets, please call Sheffield City Hall Box Office on 0114 2 789 789.

Notes for the Editor

The not-to-be-missed Raqs Britannia festival involves 3 days of spectacular workshops lead by the Bellydance Stars themselves. As part of the weekend festival, there will be a huge souk (large market of bellydance wear and products), live bands and DJs, Middle Eastern buffets, Superstar auditions, and the all new Bellydance Superstars Show: The Art of Bellydance.

Family-friendly and featuring bold new choreography, exquisite costumes and spectacular new production elements, the Saturday night show The Art of Bellydance builds on the BDSS troupe’s renowned reputation in highlighting a variety of bellydance styles and unique fusions.

The Bellydance Superstars (BDSS) are at the forefront of a worldwide explosion in prestige and popularity in the art of Bellydance, taking this once largely solo performance and ancient art of Middle Eastern culture, into the 21st Century mainstream

The All-Star Summer 2010 Bellydance Superstars cast includes:  Sonia, Petite Jamilla, Sabah, Moria, Kami Liddle, Samantha Hasthorpe, Issam Houshan and other sensational performers.

Workshops are available from Friday through to Sunday afternoon.  Throughout the 3 day festival, there are some fantastic classes from the Bellydance Superstars and their invited guests, teaching everything from back bends to isolations and pops and locks!  There is even a special offer: book 4 workshops and get the cheapest one free!  Teachers include the world-renowned: Moria, Sabah, Sonia, Lauren, Issam and others!

On Friday night, there is an evening buffet before the Guest Teachers and Performers Show in the Oval Hall.

On Saturday, there will be a Middle Eastern buffet before the new Bellydance Superstars Show: The Art of Bellydance shimmies onto the stage, with entertainment continuing in the Ballroom until the early hours. This will include guest performance artists and musicians; plus DJs and two after-show dance parties, one Tribal and one Oriental.

The festival organizers will be running an Open Stage where you can show off your latest choreography or group and solo work.

Referred to as “the most important dance troupe in the world” by London’s Sunday Times, the Bellydance Superstars is the realized vision of Miles Copeland, legendary music business mogul (The Police, Sting, I.R.S. Records). Comprised of America’s best-known, most sought-after bellydancers, the troupe has performed over 500 shows (including many sell outs) in 20 countries in the last five years, wowing over one million enthusiastic fans in venues and 100 million on television, with their fascinating live performances. The troupe has connected with fans through its performance and commercially successful Bellydance Superstars series of CDs, which are the biggest selling Arabic CDs in the mainstream marketplace, and Bellydance Superstars DVDs – the top-selling DVDs among the titles sold by Universal Music Distribution, the #1 distributor of music and video in America.

Ever-evolving, ultra-innovative and mega-popular, the Bellydance Superstars have continued to wow crowds and break new ground in 2008, proving the troupe can compete head on with the likes of mainstream dance shows such as Riverdance.

Worldwide TV interest spiked in 2008 with PBS stations broadcasting the troupe’s ‘Live in Paris show’ – filmed at the famed Follies Bergère, the Documentary Channel airing BDSS doc ‘American Bellydancer’ in November, and DirecTV in Latin America airing both shows in October to strong response.  The special, Dissonance and Harmony, featuring the Bellydance Superstars, also debuted on PBS in November as part of the Crossroads series, again noting the efforts of BDSS and Copeland to promote a bridge between cultures via entertainment.

Other hallmarks celebrated by the BDSS in the past year included its first shows performed in the Arab world to rave reviews, a highly successful tour of Italy and Spain and acclaimed performances in Dubai and Morocco (where they returned to Morocco in late 2009 for shows in Casablanca and Marrakesh).

In addition, the BDSS launched four new annual Bellydance festivals: Raqs LA and Tribal LA in Los Angeles, TribaLondon in London and Raqs America in Washington D.C.  Universal Music & Video, which has been distributing the BDSS line in the U.S. for five years, signed on to distribute to the rest of the world.

The international Bellydance Superstars have a wealth of other exciting events coming up this year, including Raqs Japan!

Brought to you by MEI International: Delivering Substance with Style

Summer Lovin’

Welcome to the third Sheff Guide and I’m here to help you discover some of summer’s most sizzling events…

June

June is the month for Dads – whether it is your biological, blood or even sugar Daddy – this month is the time to show your appreciation.

First, it’s essential to fuel up for all that ‘giving’ so get involved with Sheffield’s first Food and Drink Festival which will take place throughout the city centre and into the suburbs from 1st – 6th June. Not only will you have chance to taste the city’s culinary delights but the festival will showcase the city’s Food Heroes themselves from Award-winning Baristas to popular fishmongers – there is a delicious treat for all!

In between stuffing your face full of ice cream and other treats, balance it out with a bit of exercise and a good old shimmy on 5th June as we launch Raqs Britannia with a very special event: Shimmy for Sheffield: Back the Bid.  Come and get a free shimmy belt, dance along to Sheffield’s shortlisted  World Cup anthem courtesy of Dave Dennison and most of all kick start an exciting summer for Sheffielders from Music City to Raqs Britannia and of course, the WORLD CUP – after all the oldest team in the world comes from here…

As if that isn’t enough lovin’ to be doing, we also have Sheffield’s annual Chance to Dance Festival on Saturday 12th June so you can watch, try and learn some new dance skills from Tango to Bollywood and beyond. However, if you’re more of a chilled out cup of Cha kind of person – get your wicker picnic baskets down to Peace in the Park on 12th June in Endcliffe park, Hunters Bar. So what do you do about the kids?

Well that day is also the first day of Sheffield Children’s festival which takes place across the city from Saturday 12th June – 3rd July so there are plenty of activities to get the kids involved with from storytelling and art workshops to special cinema screenings and sports activities.

As you know, we Sheffielders don’t do anything by halves and the 19th June brings a hat trick of events: my friends from Britain’s Got Talent 2008 StrikeSheffield’s very own Martial Arts duo – are set to launch their new Martial Arts academy in Crystal Peaks – along with a personal appearance from Liam’s new celebrity girlfriend! If that’s not a subtle enough hint for you to not miss something pretty darn interesting, then you’d better get the proper low down on my blog on the Sheffield Star: blog.sophie-mei.net As is that wasn’t enough reason already to go, Sophie Mei Schools (my baby) will also be at Strike’s launch delivering bellydance demos… as well as a special BellyStar dance workshop on the same day at Greentop Circus.

This perfect day of activity, is rounded off with City Hearts’ Captivating Hearts fashion show taking place at Sheffield City Hall. The event involves Sheffield’s young models and designers showcasing the latest trends including water-dissolvable wedding dresses! Here’s hoping anyone who buys the dresses won’t want to dissolve their marriage certificate so easily – then again each to his own!

The night will also feature my other friend the winner form Britain’s Got Talent 2008 – George Sampson who’s fresh from his film debut: Street dance: 3d. And, of course, I  will be choreographing our lovely models, as well as taking part as a model myself (I figured as Naomi Campbell has recently turned forty that they may start to look for a curvy Sheffield replacement…or not). It promises to be a spectacular night and is all in aid of a good cause as City Hearts helps women who have had a number of challenges to overcome to fulfil their potential….

After a fashionistas evening, most of us will have to remember to be up making breakfast the next day for our Daddy as 20th June is Father’s Day. If you’re stuck for ideas, you can check out my blog on ‘3 fathers and me’ as I have 3 dads to buy for and to treat – so you could say I’m pretty experienced with these things! One tip: get what your dad actually wants… not what you think he should have!

Monday 21st June marks Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year so an ideal time to get your summer chores done and squeeze in some cocktails as the sunsets over Tinsley viaduct…oh, the delights.

You’re then entitled to a well-earned activity-free week until Friday 25th June when Europe’s biggest bellydance festival – Raqs Britannia – kicks off at Sheffield City Hall with a Friday night European show and workshops with Miles Copeland’s international Bellydance Superstars.

The festival runs from 25th-27th June at Sheffield City Hall and plays host to a large Souk in the City Hall Ballroom & workshops throughout the venue.  The main event is the Saturday night show – The Art of Bellydance – which features some of the world’s best fusion dance talent as well as the famous international Bellydance Superstars (BDSS) themselves! If you do nothing else, don’t miss this show. For show tickets, which cost from only £10, call:  0114 2 789 789.

Read pageXXXXXXXfor further details.

Amongst the Bellydancing extravaganza, Sheffield is proud to host its annual Pride festival in Endcliffe Park on Saturday 25th June. The event celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered members of the community as well as showcasing some of the region’s talent, singing sensations, Drag Queens and tasty treats from the stalls – this is an event not to be missed – after all, in the words of Heather Small, “what have you done today to make yourself feel proud?”

July

It may be over the hills and far away but when it comes to we Sheffielders doing charitable deeds we’ll always travel! This month launches with a charity weekend from 3rd-4th July as Sheffielders set their sights on completing BUPA’s Great Swim on Saturday 3rd July in London – this is a mile long swim in fresh water! I shall be there in a wetsuit doing it in aid of Mind – the national Mental Health Charity. Then Sunday 4th July is not only American Independence Day but also the annual Jane Tomlinson Leeds 10k where people from Yorkshire will take part for the cause along with Katrina Bagshaw, the Clarions team and me.

However, if you want to stay closer to home you can hang around at the newly renovated Millhouses Park on Saturday & Sunday 3rd – 4th July for their annual outdoor festival – Cliffhanger.

Everyone loves a bit of fun in the sun and things can get hot, hot, hot but to avoid any unwanted damage, pile on your sun lotion and remember be safe as everyone’s STIs are going on holiday with ‘em too. Now, that’s a holiday guest you can do without – so fit out and kit out.  That’s why the awareness work done by PASH (Peer Activities in Sexual Health) is so important and why I will be supporting them in their annual campaign by attending their reunion on 6th July.  Every year, PASH put on a reunion for trained peer mentors in sexual health and relationships to meet up and socialize and encourage others to think about joining up too. To find out how you can become a peer mentor or access sexual health and relationship advisory services in Sheffield – log on to CHIV.co.uk. After all that hot talk on 7 July, you’ll be ready for your package…er package holiday I mean.

After all that Summer indulgence you can give a little back and help raise vital funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity by taking part in the 2010 Run in the Park event on Sunday 11th July at Graves Park.

Another charity, which also deserves a shout, is ASSIST Sheffield who will put on a special Asylum Monologues event at the Library Theatre on 13th July, which will showcase the stories and lives of Asylum Seekers who have immigrated to the UK. After all the political jargon on the topic of Asylum Seekers and Immigration maybe it’s about time we listened to them and their stories!

Sheffield south will then reward the work of the ‘southerners’ (of Sheffield) as they play host to their very own Oscars on Friday 16th July at the Town hall.

July and this issue in fact, is perfectly rounded off with Sheffield’s largest festival – Tramlines: Music City which will take place from 23rd – 25th July throughout Sheffield City Centre. This year expects to see 50,000 revellers congregate in the city centre for a taste of Sheffield’s vibrant music scene. After all, we are an amazing City of Culture!

MEI Motto:  Summer lovin’ can be a blast…but remember ‘blast’ also meant sexually transmitted diseases in the poetry of Blake and Shakespeare! So, fit out and kit out for those hot, hot, hot moments!

You’d think that after ten years of pelvic tilting, hip sliding and shimmies (BELLYDANCE) that I’d be a hip-injured wreck. Oh no, it wasn’t until I set me 2010 resolutions to rugby and running that I have suddenly been hit with the most injuries I have ever experienced from fracture Scaphoid’s to a twisted Sciatic – these past few months have certainly been eventful.

I thought that once April came and I welcomed my 22nd Birthday without a cast on my arm or a knee support that were things were looking up – that was until I ran the Sheffield Half Marathon and 2 10K’s.

Fortunately, the BUPA physio after the Manchester 10k flagged up that I had a problem. So what did I do? No, didn’t listen to his advice but got back into training and roped in support from my Personal Trainer – Seb Kane (Greens Gym). He then encouraged me to see a Chiropractor as he didn’t want me running or doing dead lifts (weights) until I had the “shooting pain” in my hi and leg fixed.

So I went down to Sheffield Clinic of Complementary Medicine on Ecclesall Rd, Sheffield. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by two lovely and attractive receptionists who instructed me to put on a gown before going in to the Doctor. A gown?! Don’t you just hate those situations where you have completely forgotten to co-ordinate your underwear (too long being single!)

Nonetheless, I was immediately put at ease with Dr. Burns as he was so personable and completely explained what would happen in my initial consultation.

To find out what happened click: HipKiss of Life

http://blog.sophie-mei.net/2010/05/hipkiss-of-life/

Follow up Appointment

A few days later it was time for a follow-up consultation and to have my X-Rays back (which were amazingly done ‘in-clinic’).  Immediately, I could tell they were my X-Rays as I had forgotten to remove my huge bellybar which made my X-Rays look as if I’d swallowed a flower-shaped bullet.

Luckily, all my injuries are ‘fixable’ as I’m still young – that’s if I take advice and don’t run whilst my hips are still delicate (I.e. I made a faux pas by playing in the Celeb Soccer 6 at the weekend – just as well he’s used to helping football injuries).

He continued to give me a deep tissue massage and adjust my hip and spine back into places as I have a twisted Sciatic nerve. Although, I don’t like the sound I quite like the pain of Chiropractic treatment as it really feels like it’s adjusting all those bad body habits you have.

I came out feeling more agile, in a little bit of pain but nothing that can’t be soothed by the icepack he gave me.

So I’m back in a few days and already feeling the transformation  – so glad I got it sorted young and I’d recommend it to other people old and young as it’s essential for a body MOT especially later in life.

For further info:

Chiropractors use controlled forces, called adjustments, when there are restrictions around joints that the body is unable to overcome itself. Such barriers include muscle spasm, swelling (edema), scar tissue and pain.

“Whatever the problem… Chiropractic is so often the answer.”

Dr K.P. Burns Bsc D.C. and associates have been in the trade for the past twenty-six years and continue to offer a personable and welcoming service to their clients. Clients have included many celebrities including a wide host of sports stars particularly footballers.

The clinic directors are Dr K.P. Burns, Ms L.M. Burns and Mr P.Francis
